The seminar was graced by the
Hon’ble Chief Minister of Mizoram, Shri Lal Thanhawala who expressed serious
concern about absence of surveyors in the State for evaluating motor insurance
claims. Ms Yegnapriya
Bharath, Joint Director, IRDA, gave the keynote address and also made
presentation about “Policyholder Protection and Grievance Redressal”, with
emphasis on the underwriting and claim procedures relating to the Motor Insurance. Mrs.Sudha Ramanujam, Deputy Director, IRDA, handled
a special session on the role of surveyors and loss assessors encouraging the
local participants to become surveyors for servicing their own people.
Mr S.S. Das, Manager, LIC Silchar Division and Dr. L. G. Singh, Associate
Professor, Govt. Aizawl College, addressed the issues relating to “Life
Insurance Underwriting practices, claim procedures” and “Current Scenario of
motor Insurance claims in Mizoram” respectively.

Union had taken keen interest in organising the seminar and getting people
from various walks of life including students. The seminar was attended
by nearly 180 participants from various stakeholders viz.Representatives from NGOs, local Consumer Bodies, lawyers and
academicians etc. The seminar was first
of its kind in Mizoram examining the gross root problems associated with life
and motor insurance and witness to the discussions reflecting the need of developing
prompt insurance delivery systems in the state of Mizoram.
